The World of Beautiful Blythe

I would never thought "Love at First Sight" would happen to me with this doll found on ebay. She is a vintage Blythe doll by Kenner, made in 1972. Blythe doll production lasted only 1 year. I believe this doll is a prototype since she has unique features, tan skin tone with pale color lips, very different than any other vintage Kenner's Blythe dolls I have seen, not to mention her pristine condition. Her eyes are changeable, color ranging from blue to orange to pink to green like other Blythe dolls.

There is a TV commercial for her on YouTube

Note: All photos are from ebay listing.

il Buco

One of my favorite restaurants in New York city, il Buco. I love EVERYTHING about this place, from fresh and testy food to old world interior...not so much the price but it's definitely worth going there every now and then for special occasion.

I love all the copper cookware they use for cooking as well as to decorate the place. The atmosphere is always so cozy. I particularly love sitting in the back room next to kitchen, making me feel like eating at home.

The best part is light sculptures by artist Warren Muller that adorned the ceiling. I have dreamed about having his sculpture in our own kitchen!

RIP Joe Ades

I saw New York Times article about Joe Ades and felt so sad and it reminded me that I bought a pair of Peelers from him in 2005 which still works great today.

RIP Joe Ades

Rob Pruitt's Portraits

New York artist Rob Pruitt has created many awesome portraits. The most iconic ones to me are the images of Panda bears. His current solo show at Gavin Brown's gallery that I must visit also has some great self-portraits as well as portraits of his friends from facebook made into a big quilt.

My Usual Meals

BREAKFAST

Waffles with abundant berries, creme fraiche, and maple syrup

It's quite rear to have all these different type of berries on the same day. I have blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries on the same plate....quite luxury.

LUNCH

I didn't make. It's Japanese dish, Una-Don (Eal over rice)

I feel fortunate to have a Japanese supermarket nearby where I can pick up to-go meal like this. I ordered a side of miso soup too but not pictured.

DINNER

Bucatini with anchovy walnut sauce, and saute beet greens and a glass of red wine.

This is weekday dinner. Something quick and satisfying.

Tin is for Tenth

Tin is for tenth anniversary, so I gave a tintype photo session as gift to ourselves...that was back in April. The photo is done on actual tin.

Each photo was taken one at a time, like polaroid except it's not instant, so once a shot was done, the plate got processed in darkroom and then come in this box of water, then start shooting again for the next plate, imagine a lot of waiting around in between darkroom processing. That session took almost 6 hours....the light was getting darker and darker towards the evening.

Here tin plates have to be in water to cure, before they are set.

The lens is an antique but the whole camera was re-built with some new some antique parts.

The 1st Birthday for Zada

My dear friend's baby girl, Zada just had her 1st birthday party. It was quite lovely event.
They did it in a bar in Williamsburg where the back space (outdoor) is nice and pleasant.

Bday gift and Bday cake!
The cake was REALLY GOOD.
It's a chocolate caramel cake with salt sprinkled on top.
Yes salt!!! it's actually a perfect amount of salt...tasty!!!!!

No need for help. Zada used her magic fingers with that big candle.

I gave the Zada a vintage doll as a gift. This doll is called "Susie Sad Eyes" and she was made in 1972. She is as old as ME!

Saturday Breakfast

Slept in today.
No cooking for breakfast.... and I want something quick.

So the menu is simple, just whole grain baguette with fresh Ricotta and fig spread served with black coffee.
I normally prefer fresh figs with honey but can't find any at the market right now.

Anyone serve breakfast on a cutting board? or just me, weirdo!

Do you want a bite?

Vintage Vespa

Sometime, I feels like going for a ride with a vintage Vespa on a nice Sunday afternoon and looking stylish. I'd like to ride it far away, just enough to feel the freedom then come back home and make fabulous dinner.

Antique Rose

I have these antique roses for over 2 years never once bloom. Here come the third year with many blooms. The flower buds open in time for mother's day (USA) earlier in May this year. Both of them are climbing rose and are the type that have repeated blooms. The first wave finish about a month ago and this week I started seeing more buds form the second wave of flowers, hopefully will last until late Summer.
They are very fragrance so I planted both of them where we pass by frequently.

Zephirine Drouhin 1868

The pink can be intensely pretty when flower bud first open, but it fade to light pink with time.

Souvenir du Docteur Jamain 1865

Red color of SDJ turns darker with age. It could become purple plum color towards the end. When there are cold days in spring, it help flowers last longer but in Summer I doubt we will see many plum flowers.

Table Dressing - Sunday Breakfast

It's been a while since I started collecting brown and green color dishes, bowls, cups etc. The 2 colors always look great with food so I stick with it although I do have other colors to spice up the table. I like mixing up different patterns of similar shades.
Here are some examples of what I have so far....showing with typical breakfast on lazy days.

Green marble pattern plate at top left is from a French ceramist. I found her on internet when I was researching marble pattern ceramic. This is really a favorite piece.

Solid brown plate at bottom center is from Califonian potter, Edith Heath. She was around 90 years old when I bought this plate over 10 years ago. I fell in love with brown plate the first time when I went to a restaurant called "Once Upon A Time" near Surawong/ Silom road. It's now gone, but memory remains!

Brown speckle coffee cup and saucer is a vintage from 1960's. The pattern is created by using sponge, dipped in colored glaze and stamped all over to create pattern.

Oval dish in the middle of photo is actually the same as marble plate but it is on doll size. Very adorable mini little thing. I fond doll size ceramics can be used at table as accent nicely.
